Governor Rick Scott managed to go from hero to goat in a span of about two hours on Tuesday- and tick off alot of supporters in the process. After Scott visited the Freedom Tower in Miami to sign a bill that prohibited the state and local governments in Florida from doing business with firms that tied to Cuba and Syria, the Governor’s Office issued a press release stating that the very restrictions that he just signed won’t take effect until the federal government gives them approval to do so.
The glaring question that results- why would Governor Scott sign such a measure in the first place knowing that its legality would be subject to review by the ultra-partisan U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice?
Do you think the 2nd Amendment will be destroyed by the Biden Administration?(2)
The Federal Government has previously given the green light for states to restrict hiring firms that are tied to the regimes governing in Iran and Sudan, but it hasn’t done so yet for either Cuba or Syria, which brings doubt on the legality of the legislation itself.
Babalu Blog’s Val Prieto was happily in attendance for the signing of the law, but he is now one pissed-off hombre-Either Governor Scott was the recipient of some bad legal advice or some even worse political advice- either way, it’s hard to see how Governor Scott will repair the relations that have been needlessly strained with the Cuban-exile community.Governor Scott,
I had the privilege of attending the signing ceremony for HB 959 held at the Freedom Tower in Miami yesterday. I was honored to have been in the presence of our esteemed federal and state representatives, human rights activists, Cuban and Syrian exile groups and other freedom loving Americans. I was proud to be a small part of such an auspicious occasion, and one predicated by a principled and moral victory. I think it safe to assume that all in attendance felt the same way, and, there is no doubt that all of those gathered had supported your campaign and your subsequent governorship. You were our governor, the man we helped put in office, leading by honor and virtue. Doing what was right as opposed to expeditious.
We were wrong. You duped us.
There in the Freedom Tower, our very own historic Ellis Island, where innumerable tears have been shed by the Cuban community, where the profundity of loss and hope and freedom has been enshrined for half a century, you lied to us. You accepted accolade after accolade, embrace after embrace, handshake after handshake while speaking of principles and liberty and justice knowing full well that the truth you kept hidden from us would dishearten and disillusion. You willfully deceived and betrayed a community that has lived through more than it’s fair share of same.
Congressman Rivera is also really steamed at what transpired and has threatened to sue Governor Scott over the issue-
“As a Florida taxpayer who does not want my tax dollars going to companies that do business with terrorist regimes, I am more than willing to sue the governor and the state of Florida to force implementation of this law,” Rivera said.
“I’m sure the governor has been misled by his staff and hope he will reconsider his position so that it does not result in a lawsuit,” said Rivera, who later joined state lawmakers on Spanish-language radio to bash Scott, already a highly unpopular governor.–Miami Herald
